Tick Control Using a Tick Shampoo

Tips for Using a Flea and Tick Shampoo

There are a number of flea and tick shampoos available. These are designed to help control ticks on your pet and prevent a tick bite that could lead to a tick-borne disease.

Here are some tips for using a flea and tick shampoo on your pet.

If your pet has sensitive skin or spots that have become irritated, consider using an oatmeal-based flea and tick shampoo shampoo or a shampoo that's easy on the skin.

Choose a location carefully. It should have access to warm running water for rinsing and sufficient room for some splashing.

Set out everything you will need in advance, including a generous supply of towels or drying cloths..

Choose a good quality shampoo. If you don’t have pet shampoo, you can use salon-quality "people" shampoo, but dilute it to ten parts water to one part shampoo.

Talk to your vet about the best way to protect you pet's eyes during bathing. Sometimes the vet will recommend a lubricating salve to avoid any injury to your pet from the shampoo.

If you have a long-haired pet, brush him or her before you start to get out mats and tangles.

It's generally recommended that you don't blow-dry your pet because the heat from a blow dryer may cause more irritation. Let your pet's coat air-dry.

When your pet has dried, you may then brush out the coat with a gentle brush.
