Late Stage Symptoms of Lyme Disease

Lyme disease rashLate stage symptoms of Lyme disease may not appear until months after the initial tick bite. The symptoms begin to accumulate over time, and early stage symptoms and late stage symptoms often overlap.

Typical late stage Lyme disease symptoms may include:

  • Fever--generally low grade, but can sometime be high.
  • Profound fatigue and other symptoms that resemble the flu. These symptoms may come and go.
  • Headaches that seem as severe as migraines.
  • Musclar aches and pains similar to arthritis.
  • Changes in liver function due to liver inflammation and possibly hepatitis. These are rare but they do occur in a small percentage of patients.
  • Vision changes, including blurriness, conjunctivitis or "pink eye" and "seeing spots before the eyes."
  • A skin rash (see picture, above left) that resembles a bulls eye. Other unidentified rashes may begin to appear in other parts of the body away from the location of the actual tick bite.
  • Neurological symptoms usually develop much later as the Lyme disease infect progresses.
  • Aseptic meningitis,
  • Bell's palsy, which is a partial paralysis of the face
  • Encephalitis or encephalopathy which may cause short-term memory loss and other psychiatric symptoms like depression, panic attacks, and an overall feeling of anxiety.
